Parrots, in general, are prone to various health issues, especially those related to the respiratory system. Other infections can also occur, such as in the eyes, beak, and on their body.
I am not a specialized veterinarian, but the time I spent with my grandmother’s parrot allowed me to provide some first aid to her sick bird. Of course, sometimes she needed to go to a veterinarian for medication.
So, if you notice that your parrot is suffering or does not seem to be in its usual state, we strongly recommend that you go to the veterinarian as soon as possible, and this article will help you know how to treat your sick parrot and how to care for it during its recovery.
How to care for your sick parrot?
If you absolutely want to care for your parrot at home, let us guide you on how you can be helpful and assist it in its recovery.
Some diseases will require prescription medications, and some diseases will require you to leave the parrot at the veterinary clinic for a certain period. Indeed, not all “home remedies” will help your adorable parrot.
Thus, if you wish to treat your parrot at home, you must be able to assess the seriousness of the illness your parrot is suffering from.
It is normal to want to relieve your bird as soon as possible with home remedies, and you can therefore try these two points:
- Boost its immune system;
- Increase its appetite.
IMPORTANT: Do not self-medicate your parrot without consulting your veterinarian.
How to help it strengthen its immune system?
To strengthen the immune system, improve liver function, and assist the digestive and respiratory systems of your parrot, there are many remedies you can use, the most effective option being to use a garlic and lemon solution.
To prepare it, simply:
- crush a single clove of garlic and place it in 300-500 ml of water;
- let the garlic soak in the water for 8 to 10 hours;
- strain the solution;
- and squeeze the lemon into it.
Note that you should remove your parrot’s water bottle, hydrate it for 4 to 5 hours, then give it the garlic and lemon solution and replace the mixture every 12 hours with a fresh mixture.
Continue to give the garlic and lemon solution to your bird for 3 to 5 days.
How to help it increase its appetite?
To increase your parrot’s appetite, you can add more pepper to its food, especially cayenne pepper.
If it is already in a phase of attachment or advanced socialization, and you are used to hand-feeding it, you can encourage it and offer food more frequently.
If, by applying these techniques, your parrot does not regain strength, consult your veterinarian quickly. We will now explain the 9 points to help it in its physical recovery.
The 9 ways to properly care for and treat your sick parrot at home
#1 – Recognize the symptoms of a sick parrot
Recognizing and understanding the symptoms of a sick parrot can help you assist your sick parrot and sometimes save its life. Indeed, there are multiple symptoms that indicate serious health problems. And without immediate intervention from a veterinarian, the parrot can die.
#2 – Consult a veterinarian specialized in parrots
When you suspect a problem exists and your parrot shows concerning symptoms, you must see a veterinarian for a diagnosis and medication. Remember that giving your parrot any type of medication without consulting a veterinarian can lead to death. Also ask the veterinarian what side effects the medication might have on your bird.
#3 – Administer the medication while strictly following the dosage
You must follow the exact instructions that your veterinarian has given you regarding the use and dosage of the medications.
#4 – Allow your parrot to rest in peace
Give your parrot some rest and remove any sources of stress around it. You can also change the usual location of its cage to a more private spot, away from family members, noise, and any other pets.
#5 – Ensure it does not lack water or food
You must ensure that your sick parrot is eating its food well and drinking enough water. If it continues to reject food after your visit to the veterinarian, call them back to inform them and receive new advice.
#6 – Keep it in a warm environment
Provide warmth to your parrot, especially if it suffered from cold or fever, or according to your veterinarian’s instructions.
#7 – Keep its cage clean at all times
You must maintain hygiene inside your parrot’s space as much as possible, even if your parrot is not suffering from illness. This routine can prevent your parrot from contracting infections or worsening its condition. So in the case of a sick bird, it is even more important to maintain impeccable hygiene in its cage.
#8 – Regularly monitor its health status
You must observe your parrot’s condition, especially if it is sick. You should notice if the parrot is getting worse, and if so, you must inform the veterinarian. Persistent symptoms or symptoms that worsen should be taken very seriously. If you allow your parrot’s health to deteriorate, there is a strong risk that the veterinarian may not be able to help…
#9 – Be attentive to it and show your affection
The healing process for humans, cats, dogs, and any other living being is both mental and physical. Therefore, you must support your parrot. When you move its cage to a quiet place, make sure to check on it from time to time, let it feel your presence, especially if it is very attached to you (very advanced attachment phase). Some parrots may show aggression towards the owner, because all they want while they are suffering is peace… But persevere to see if your parrot can tolerate caresses or any other interaction with you.
It is normal to want to care for your sick parrot at home. However, despite all these tips, we remind you of the golden rule: if your parrot is unwell, do not delay in consulting your specialized veterinarian.
